Decorating Your Children's Rooms

Fun and functionality are the key ingredients in children's furniture. When selecting furnishings for your own children, make sure you keep the following points in mind:

THE IMPORTANCE OF SCALE
It's not only uncomfortable for a five year old to climb up on an oversized chair, it's also dangerous! Make sure you have furniture scaled to your childrens' sizes- a toddler-sized chair and small wooden table atop a colorful area rug says "this is your space" in a loving way.

GIRLS ROOMS VS BOYS ROOMS
Blue for boys, pink for girls? Those days are over, and you'll find children's furniture available in every color and shade encompassing the whole spectrum of the rainbow, from soft pastels to cheery primary reds, blues and yellows.

There's no rule, either, that says you have to use ribbons and lace in a girls' room: many girls nowadays prefer cleaner lines. Of course, if your little princess wants a four-poster canopy as her dreambed, go for it.

Little boys are in luck, as well: beds today come designed as everything from race cars to airplanes.

DREAMS OF THEMES
Children love theme bedrooms, and most grown-ups love decorating to a theme! Consider an outer space theme, with a dark blue ceiling painted to look like the sky, with planets and glow in the dark skies. Or an under-the-sea scheme, in soothing sea greens and blues, with a stencilled border of seahorses and tropical fish. Murals are extremely popular among children.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING
Perhaps of prime importance in a child's bedroom is storage. Consider investing in a beautiful hope chest to store toys in- which can grow with your child. An extra set of drawers can help eliminate clutter. And beds with built-in drawers are especially good for young children's toys, or teenagers' private belongings.
